Back in the 1950s, the textbook definition of health was one who is free from disease. That was a person who was healthy. The Vedas spoke about a more comprehensive definition of health. Written over 5,000 years ago, this is what the wise ones foretold ~
“The person who always eats wholesome food, enjoys a regular lifestyle, remains unattached to the objects of the senses, gives and forgives, loves truth, and serves others, is without disease.”
~ Sushrata Samhita
That’s really impressive. So what this tells me is that a healthy person, according to our ancestors, was one who was functioning on subtle and gross levels of his or her being in a balanced harmonious way. To be healthy, then, is to be realized.
The three doshas, Vata, Pitta, Kapha, are simply representations of the five elements ~ space, air, fire, water, and earth. Like Mother Nature, if one element becomes dominant for too long, it throws off the cycle of life. Humans live by the same rules as the Earth. We constantly seek balance and integrity.
The aspects for healthy functioning are:
- The doshas are in balance.
- All tissues (muscle, fat, blood, bone…) function with strength and integrity.
- The digestive fire is balanced with good appetite, digestion, and assimilation.
- Elimination is regular.
- The sense faculties and the mind are undisturbed.
- There is a feeling of happiness and contentment.
Are these areas functioning well in your life? What, if anything, feels out of balance? Do you know what is the cause? Are there simple tweaks you could make to bring more contentment to your life?
Don’t underestimate the power of self-awareness. If you really look into your world, the answers you seek are there.
