The Primary Relationship

The Primary Relationship

The Primary RelationshipYou have a soulmate. Whether or not you’re in a relationship, you are engaged in a life-long partnership. It may be smooth, rocky, blissful at times, or totally dysfunctional. I’m referring to the relationship of mind and body. In dharma practice this is often called the primary relationship. From this stems all other encounters. The way we relate to our own state of being reflects how we relate to lovers, friends, family, ideas, colors, even space itself. It all begins here – with our relative, very ordinary life. Do we fold our clothes? Do we hit the snooze button each morning? Are we always rushing to work? Or working late? Do we eat on the go? When emotions arise, do we relate?

This primary relationship is a dance, a work in progress, intimacy itself. This VDay try something radical. Renew your vow. Hold a ceremony. Give yourself a ring, a letter, a gift. Make an offering. If the primary relationship is separate, how can you establish connection again? And then consciously make a stand for your self love. What do you promise to do or say or be when the going gets rough, in moments of ecstasy, till death do you part?
