Let’s face it. Most of us would say, “I’m not a morning person.” And if you happen to be one of the few to claim otherwise, more than likely your happy a.m. energy defends itself daily against a barrage of scornful sleep laden glares on their way to a blackened pot of coffee.

Gone are the days of waking before dawn to milk the cows, for most of us anyway. Our culture is pretty much at war with the good old-fashioned “good night’s sleep” any way you cut it.

But there is a magical secret out there some lucky folks have discovered. Mornings can be the most glorious, uplifting and inspired part of the day. Seriously. They’re bright, and quiet and so full of potential. An early morning routine can be like a secret gift you give yourself each day to start off on the best possible foot. Of course, magical or not, early mornings can still be very difficult to maintain. If you have kids, likely your day starts before you have a chance to get your feet in your slippers. Or it’s your job. Or your dog. Or a hundred other pressing things that keep you up late and hitting the snooze button as long as possible come morning (raise your hand if you’ve ever spent the time between snoozing calculating the latest possible minute you can get up and still get to your meeting on time…)

Sleep is of course imperative to a healthy lifestyle, so finding a balance between bedtime and waking time must come first. But when you can make it work, starting your day on purpose can be life changing. It’s really about the attitude you bring into your first thoughts of the day.  Ok, life, here I am, awake and ready. What’s in store for me? Bring it on, I’m ready!  vs.  harrrrroooommmfffffffff….. it makes a difference.  It’s also important to not begin in a rush. It sets a dysfunctional cord for the entire day. Give yourself the gift of a peaceful awakening, a quiet and simple morning practice, and a proactive mantra like now, my day is beginning. I greet this morning with light and love.

Of course, maybe if every single one of us rose to greet the dawn, the mornings would loose their peaceful quiet, or maybe we would each carry that peacefulness inside us throughout the day. And wouldn’t that be beautiful?
